Research Skills Workshops Series (Jan to Mar 2016)

The Library is pleased to arrange a series of research skills workshops for researchers and postgraduate students. CUHK researchers and postgraduate students are all welcome to join the workshops. Interested undergraduate students are also welcome to attend.




Program 1: Sharpen Your Research Skills
Finding Theses and Dissertations in Your Research Area
This workshop demonstrates how to locate theses and dissertations from universities in Hong Kong, China and other countries.

Program 2: Managing Citations for Your Research
Managing Reference Citations with RefWorks
This workshop will demonstrate:
  • How to use RefWorks, a web-based bibliography management tool, to produce bibliographies and in-text references in a variety of citation styles (e.g. MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.)
  • How to use a cloud-based version of RefWorks

Mendeley for Researchers
Mendeley is a powerful and free reference manager to organize your research papers. This workshop demonstrates:
  • How to format your citations into a bibliography in a chosen citation style
  • How to annotate and highlight in your PDFs
  • How to share references with others for better collaboration

Program 3: Disseminating Your Research Paper Effectively
Open Access for Your Publications
Open Access allows your research papers to be freely available online to maximize their visibility and use, and the authors have the means to control integrity of their rights in their publications. This workshop demonstrates:
  • Concept, types and importance of OA
  • How to choose appropriate Open Access journals and in-house green repositories for sharing scholarly works
  • How to use OA to promote personal research work and build academic reputation

Program 4: Measuring and Showcasing Your Research Impact
Managing Your Author Identity – ORCID iD
Establishing an author identity with the use of ID is increasingly important to distinguish yourself accurately in the research community from those of others with similar names so that your scholarly publications can be easily recognized. ORCID is an open, non-profit, community-driven effort to serve this purpose. This workshop aims at showing you:
  • What is ORCID iD and why use it
  • How to set-up an ORCID profile as a free and persistent digital identifier that uniquely distinguishes yourself
  • How to connect your research activities such as your latest publication, and linking automatically your other IDs such as ResearcherID with ORCID iD

Program 5: Copyright and Research
Copyright for Scholarly Publishing
This workshop will demonstrate:
  • Copyright issues relating to scholarly publishing
  • Retain your own author's rights in scholarly publishing
  • Using Creative Commons license for copyright protection in open access environment

Copyright for Thesis Writing
This workshop covers:
  • What is copyright?
  • Copyright context in Hong Kong
  • Who holds ownership of the copyright to a CUHK thesis or dissertation?
  • What is third party copyright material?
  • Copyright exemption - Fair Dealing
  • What you should do with third party copyright materials in your thesis?
  • What you should do when using your own published journal article in your thesis?

黎錦超教授特藏捐贈典禮





To acknowledge the generous donation by Mrs. Joan Leung Lye, wife of the late Professor Eric Lye, a donation ceremony of the “Professor Eric Lye Kum Chew Collection” was held by the School of Architecture on 14 January 2016 in the Architecture Library.  Officiating guests included (from left to right): Professor Nelson Chen, Director of the School of Architecture; Professor Chiu Chi-yue, Dean of Social Science; Mrs. Joan Leung Lye; Professor Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Ms. Louise Jones, University Librarian and Professor Ho Puay-Peng, School of Architecture.
